Flurasep™-Medical Device Type
3
Use of fluorocarbons for PREVENTION OF SURGICAL ADHESIONS.
Large unmet medical need. Device is an inert
substance and hence very safe. Provided in a 50ml spray
gel. Easy to use, no refrigeration necessary, and efficacious.
Inflammation or trauma can cause tissues to bond to other
tissues or organs(much like the process of forming scat
tissue). The effects of such scar formation and tissue adhesion
include female infertility, arthritic joints, repeated surgeries
to remove abdominal and thoracic adhesions and a variety
of other medical conditions that often remain undiagnosed
Currently used in the field of ophthalmic surgery as a tool
for maneuvering intraocular tissues and as a short or medium-term
vitreous substitute. The low surface tension of PDF provides
for a mechanism that allows it to spread rapidly and evenly
throughout the aqueous environment, leaving a fine film
between the layers of tissues, reducing inflammation and
speeding the healing process and thus reducing adhesions.
Estimate sales could reach $400-500 million annually.
